Richard Morgan - An Appreciation

Richard Morgan

Richard Morgan, a son of John and Eileen Morgan was born in Bawnboy in 1944. He was placed second in a family of four boys and two girls -- James, Carl, Frank R.I.P. Anne and Eileen.
He attended Bawnboy and Tomena National Schools and progressed to St Patrick's College, Cavan. He qualified as a National Teacher from St Patrick's Training College, Drumcondra in 1964.
He taught for three years in Shankill N.S. Co. Dublin before moving to Shanaboe N.S. Abbeyleix for six years. He returned to his native Cavan where he taught for seven years in St Felim's N.S. Cavan. His final move was to Crosserlough N.S. where he retired in 1999.
He married Mary Mills, Tuam and they reared a family of three -- Gareth, Janet and Richard.
In his youth Richard played football for Templeport. He was usually goalkeeper where he wanted to emulate his father who played in goal for Cavan senior team.
Richard had a great love of history and he contributed handsomely to the book 'Templeport.
He transcribed a huge quantity of Church Births, Marriages and Deaths as well as lots of other genealogical information for the Bawnboy web site.
He visited Gallipoli and has written a book on it.
He played a big part in setting up Cavan Teachers' Centre and was its first chairman, He was also chairman of the Cavan branch of the I.N.T.O (Irish National Teachers' Association) for a time.
When he retired he became an advisor to schools in connection with the New Curriculum
Later he became chairman of the retired teachers' Association in Cavan.
Having battled illness for over five years Richard passed away on 11th April 2015
May he rest in peace.
